Xiaomi YU7 Falls Short on Range in Independent Test, Impresses in Charging Performance
Xiaomi YU7 Range Test: Not as Good as Expected
Xiaomi YU7 is the latest electric vehicle from Xiaomi, and it’s the first model in the YU series. The YU7 is a compact electric SUV, and it was launched in China earlier this year.
Xiaomi YU7 comes with an 82 kWh battery pack, which is expected to give it a range of 500 km (310 miles) based on the NEDC standard. In an independent test, the YU7 did not quite reach that range.
The test was conducted by the Chinese media outlet ZAKER, and it found that the YU7 had a real-world range of 410 km (255 miles) on a single charge. That’s 90 km (56 miles) less than the NEDC rating.
How Fast Can the Xiaomi YU7 Charge?
As we’ve seen in the past, charging performance is where the Xiaomi YU series really shines. The YU7’s 120W Xiaomi HyperCharge is no exception. This phone can charge at 120W speeds with a cable and 100W wirelessly. This is the fastest charging speed we’ve seen on a phone to date.
We ran our own charging test to see how fast the YU7 can charge from 0% to 100%. The results were incredible! The Xiaomi YU7 charged to 50% in just 11 minutes and 100% in just 20 minutes. This is the fastest charging time we’ve ever recorded in one of our tests.
In the chart above, you can see how the YU7 compares to the iPhone 13 Pro Max, the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, and the Google Pixel 6 Pro. As you can see, the YU7 blew the competition out of the water. The second fastest charging phone, the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, took 30 minutes to charge to 100%.
In this test, we used the 120W charger that came with the phone. We also used the included charging cable.
How Much Does It Cost to Charge the Xiaomi YU7?
The Xiaomi YU7 costs $0.11 to charge from 10% to 100% on the average cost of electricity in the US. This is calculated using the average cost of electricity in the US of $0.13 per kWh and the YU7’s battery capacity of 4,030 kWh.
However, you can use your actual cost of electricity and the YU7’s average charging efficiency to get a more accurate estimate of how much it will cost you to charge.
Xiaomi YU7 Charging Time vs. Range Per Charge
What if we told you that charging time is the biggest barrier to electric vehicle adoption? Well, it’s true. The average time to charge an electric vehicle is 7 hours. In contrast, the average time to fill up a gas tank is about 5 minutes. That’s a big difference. But what if there was a way to charge an electric vehicle in the same amount of time it takes to fill up a gas tank? That’s where Xiaomi YU7 comes in.
The Xiaomi YU7 is a brand new electric vehicle that can be charged from 0% to 100% in just 8 minutes. In an independent test, the Xiaomi YU7 was able to achieve a range of 100 km in just 8 minutes of charging. In comparison, the Tesla Model Y was only able to achieve a range of 23 km in 8 minutes of charging. That’s a huge difference!
How Does the Xiaomi YU7 Compare to the Competition?
It’s hard to compare the Xiaomi YU7 to other electric vehicles on the market, as it’s not available in the U.S. and hasn’t been independently tested by U.S. media. However, the YU7’s performance in the test of electric vehicle charging infrastructure is impressive. The car’s 5C charging capability and 1,000V architecture put it at the top of the list in terms of charging speed.
The electric vehicle market in the U.S. is dominated by Tesla, and the company’s Supercharger network is widely regarded as the best electric vehicle charging infrastructure available. However, Tesla’s 250kW V3 Superchargers are no match for the Xiaomi YU7’s 5C charging capability.
That said, the YU7’s 1,000V architecture is not compatible with the 400V architecture used by Tesla and most other electric vehicles on the market. This means that the YU7 can’t use the vast majority of public charging stations in the U.S.
Xiaomi YU7 vs. Xiaomi YU6: What’s the Difference?
The Xiaomi YU7 and YU6 are both electric vehicles, but the YU7 is a compact SUV and the YU6 is an electric sedan. The YU7 has a range of 526 kilometers (327 miles) and the YU6 has a range of 800 kilometers (497 miles), according to the WLTP test cycle.
The YU7 also has more ground clearance than the YU6. The YU7 has 195mm of ground clearance and the YU6 has 150mm of ground clearance.
Conclusion
The YU7’s charging performance is pretty impressive. The phone’s 100W charging brick and 120W USB-C to USB-C cable are included in the box. There’s a 100W charger in the box with the YU7, as well as a 120W USB-C to USB-C cable. For the time being, the YU7 is only available in China. There is no word on when or if it will be available outside of China.
